I went in knowing only "djinn" and "Cairo" so there were a few surprises in the world building, understatement for sure. This starts with a dead djinn, an investigator pair, mysterious glyphs, and ends in an unexpected way. I hope we see these characters again....more

I like the world building of an alternate history/ steampunk / fantasy Egypt and the forefront of Cairo and Egyptian culture, detached a bit from the British empire even if they are a presence and central to the main plot. It feels like the primary message is don't underestimate women! Ha.
Ultimately I do think my enjoyment of the novel was enhanced by my reading of the three connected novellas, especially where the angels were involved....more

I listened to the audio narrated by Julian Thomas, found in the Libby app provided by my public library.
In this novella, a tram car has been causing all sorts of problems and detectives are sent to investigate. The world for this one has a lot about women - women's rights, women's bodies, maybe even a female being of some sort?
I felt relieved I would be reading the novel in print because some of the names and beings I am having a hard time spelling from the audio....more
