No one can write dialogue like she can. And omg does Penelope kick ass. I loooooove that Rowell gave her Hermione so much extra spunk and badassery. And I love Simon and Baz, of course. How can you not? I only wish the pace had been a bit slower so we would have had more time for the characters to interact, more time for world building. The plot was awesome, but I wanted to live with these characters for longer, to really linger in their world. ...more

The only thing I couldn't really get behind (view spoiler)[ was the plotting for the second half of the book once the threesome are on the flood and weird, random things start happening to them. I'm just not a fan of those kinds of portal fantasy stories (think Alice in Wonderland and The Girl Who Circumnavigated Fairyland). (hide spoiler)] Looking forward to the next installment!...more

It's sort of familiar ground, though, and fans of Daughter of Smoke and Bone will recognize the star crossed lovers kept apart by heartbreaking circumstances and cultural loyalties which are seemingly impossible to overcome. The tropes of angel and demons also make an appearance. But the characters, setting, magic, and situations are different enough to make this a great novel on its own. And, like I said, that prose!...more
