DEVICE FOR IMPARTING MOTION TO MOVABLE BODIES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 576,906, dated February 9, 1897.
Application filed February 15, 1896. Serial No. 579,436. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, AXEL L. SJOBERG, of Union Hill, in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and Improved Device for Impartin g Motion to Movable Objects, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of my invention is to provide a simple, durable, and'economic device for imparting motion to movable objects, especially such objects as toys or similar articles in which it is primarily desired to provide an article with a rapid or a slow movement, the device being so constructed that it may be entirely contained within the article or within a shell or other casing forming a portion of the article, the winding of the device or the storage of power being accomplished by the manipulation of the article, it not being necessary to have access to the device itself.
The invention consists in the novel construction and combination of the several parts, as will be hereinafter fully set forth, and pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specification, in which the figure represents a sectional view of a hollow ball having the improved power-accumulating device applied thereto, the device being in side elevation.
In the drawing I have illustrated the application of the improvement to a hollow ball; but as will be readily understood the improvement can be applied to other movable objects.
As shown in the drawing, a frame 10 is secured to opposite sides of the ball A, and a shaft 11 is journaled in the said frame, extending beyond the sides thereof, being provided at each extremity with a counterbalance-weight 12. The lower end of one or more springs 13 is secured to the bottom portion of the frame 10, and when two springs are employed they are preferably connected above the shaft 11 by means of a cross-bar 14.
One end of a cord, rope, or cable 15, or the equivalent thereof, is secured to the cross-bar 14, and the said cord is carried over a guidepulley 16, located at the upper portion of the fixed frame 10, and from thence the cord is carried downward and secured to the shaft 11.
hen the ball is turned, the cord 15 will be wound upon the shaft 10, placing the springs under tension, and when, for example, the springs are expanded so that they closely approach the guide-pulley 16 the ball may be placed upon the ground, floor, or other support and will be given movement, owing to the contraction of the spring tending to unwind the cord 15 from the shaft, thereby turning the ball.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The combination with a movable object, of a frame fixedly located therein, a counterbalanced winding-shaft j ournaled in the said frame, a tension device secured to the said movable object at one of its ends, a cord attached to the said tension device and said shaft, and a guide for the said cord fixedly attached to the said movable object, as and for the purpose specified.
2. The combination with a movable object, of a frame fixedly located therein, a counterbalanced winding-shaft journaled in the said frame, a tension device comprising one or more spiral springs secured at one end to one side of the movable object, a guide located at the opposite side of the movable object,
and a cord engaging the guide and having" one end connected with the said windingshaft and the other end connected with the said spiral springs, as and for the purposeset -forth.
