I once had a Hoyt and a Melissa in my life as well. Hoyt was an abusive low life POS. Melissa was the stereotypical GF who thought that she could change the red flag waving garbage can. Not only was she wrong, she was enabling the prick of a BF to continue to abuse her son. That right there should have won her the mom of the year award. Do I sound bitter? Oh yeah, I do and I give zero fucks. Am I triggered? Yep, I'm not even going to deny it. So let's break it down.
Hoyt - Absolute garbage of a man. He was so busy thinking he had to teach Patrick how to be a man and he needed to learn himself. He got what he deserved and it should have happened sooner than later.
Melissa - Worst Mother of the Year. Not only did she allow someone to speak and act the way he did toward her son, but she kept telling him sorry. I'm sorry for this, I'm sorry for that on top of lying to the poor kid for his entire life. Almost everything she said to this poor kid was a lie. And then she has the balls to tell him that she is his mother and he needs to do what she says. Yeak ok. She also makes every situation that occurs in the book 20 times harder than it needed to be. For what ends? To save her sorry ass? There were so many times in the book that I wanted to drop her in the ocean. Not even toddlers make as much of a mess as she did with her life and her kids lives.

The Main character, Amy Dowell and her 5 year old daughter Kimberly have been moving from place to place for the last 2 years. Amy's husband died and they lost everything. Amy and her daughter travel from town to town in an old truck with a camper attached to serve as their home. With the prospect of a job, Amy arrives in town and heads for a church to try and get a meal. She attracts the attention of Lucy Watts who is in charge of the free meal program that helps out the homeless and less fortunate. Lucy takes an immediate liking to Amy and her daughter and helps them out. This is where I find a bit of the book to be very unrealistic.
The message of the book is amazing and I have no trouble with that. In fact I think everyone should pick up the book and read it just for that reason. The problem I have is how certain events went down. Some went to fast to be believable and others just seemed to be ridiculous to the point of bordering on the author being a bit delusional. I understand what he was trying to get at, but in order for the readers to really believe it not everything runs as smooth and perfect as the author made it out to be.
So that's my rant. Don't get me wrong, I did enjoy the book and the message is absolutley amazing even for someone who is not a christian like myself. If you can get past some of the stuff that just seems unbelievable to actually happen than this is a good book for you as well....more
