If they ever get past algebra it’ll be such a game changer to write out formulas instead of typing them. Now whether the calculator app will be able to handle said formulas is to be seen. I think MATLAB could handle precision up to 10x-16. I’d be fine with 10x-6 tbh.

That’s a good point. I hope it does scientific notation for the answers.

oh god i hate chemistry. Like why do you need a shitton of formulas to calculate pH smh

That’s just how nature works. That’s like saying, why is gravity 9.81 and not 1.

No weight is always equal to mass multiplicated by g, with g being different depending on planets. For ph you can literally use the Henderson hasselbalch, you can use 1/2pKa - 1/2log(c), you can use the average of pka values regarding the system … I prefer physics by far

OP, your notation is f—-d and will probably get a zero on this answer.  You’re solving for pKa, not for Lactic Acid.

You need to keep a better track of your variable names and knowns vs unknowns. pKa = ??? Lc = 0.087 pH = 4.80 LA = 0.010

Given your variables you noted and to solve for LA in the given form you have written would be:

pKa = 0.010

Lc = 0.087

pH = 4.80

LA = ???

pH = pKa + log(Lc/LA)

rearrange for LA:

LA = Lc epKa - pH

LA = 0.087*e0.010-4.8

LA = 1.41 x 10-6

So in this case the iPad arrived at the wrong answer or this is just a bogus post.

His variable is 100% correct but he copied the formula directly from the book. The only thing he did was skip the actual math and call out for the value. I didn’t do the math but if he called for pKa, it should have resulted in the correct value. I think he messed up all his variable definitions.

I see what you mean, but if the iPad had done the math then:

pH = pKa + log(Lc/LA)

And he wrote:

pKa = 0.010

Lc = 0.087

pH = 4.80

LA = ???

Such that:

4.8 = 0.010 + log(0.087/LA)

So if the iPad solved for LA then it should’ve spit out LA = 1.41 x 10-6

oh my god i never thought of this. this’ll make studying a lot easier

I already used quick notes for quick calculations, where I just used my head or popped up the calculator on my phone. Didn’t realise yet how much easier it will be now 👌

Hopefully they extend it to more contexts.

This would’ve been so helpful, but I just finished up the year of General chemistry I had to take would’ve been great to have that feature though.

Isn't something like that just keeping kids dumber? I'm all for it as an adult, but damn, it should at least show how stuff is being calculated

Everything written in white is what OP would enter. The only thing the iPad spits out is yellow. So it's not going to make us "dumber". Because you'd still need to give it variables and a formula, like OP did. It just reduces the need to pull out a calculator!

Yeah, but it can auto-calculate Bhaskara, for example, or any other sort of numerical expression by just providing the answer.

How is it different from inserting the same thing in a calculator?

I've always called it the quadratic formula lol so I had to double check. Does it really? I haven't seen that done yet. Even if it did you'd still need to write out the variables and formula. You can't just write "calculate the quadratic formula". I don't believe it'll do anything.

No because the student still needs to understand what the equation is doing. For example OP flipped lactic acid concentration and pKa for some reason.
