Hi. I created a subpage for the French translation team as part of the translation coordination effort. If you consider yourself as a (willing?) active translator (eng-> fra or fra->eng), please add your name on the members' list. Soon, I'll add a selection of pending translation tasks. Thank you!

Bonjour.

About the Mickey Mouse's picture erasure in the Occitan Wikipedia

Hi Bastique,

I'm a bit perplex about the erasure of MIckey Mouse's picture in the Occitan Wikipedia since I've seen the same picture in the French and the Italian Wikipedias and no erasure at all there. I don't know if there are some copyrights on the picture (you didn't seem real sure...), I just wished you had told the Occitan Wikipedian people before erasing the picture and then proceed just the same in the other Wikipedias. See you, have a nice day, coralament, Capsot

Just out of curiosity

To Bastique: I am just curious. Is it right for you to remove shizhao's checkuser function without having an in-depth discussion with the whole community, especially people from the Chinese Wikipedia?--Seasurfer 03:25, 8 February 2007 (UTC)Reply

There's a distinction between local checkuser and steward checkuser. Since there aren't 2 checkusers on chinese wikipedia, no local (permanent) checkusers can exist. But we stewards (all of us) can always perform checkusers there if needed, precisely becuase there's no local checkusers. drini [es:] [commons:] 03:20, 13 February 2007 (UTC)Reply

New checkuse features

Hello Cary,

I have a few questions regarding new features of CheckUser extension and the policy about informing the community about those.

  1. It appears that the last version of CheckUser extension allows people with checkuser access to see not only IPs for the editor and edits from IP, but also User-Agents for given user or IP. Having heard about that, I examined current Checkuser policy, and found that this feature is not described there. However it is described that checkusers can get IPs for editor and edits from IP, so basicly that document describes how checkuser interface works, without the intention to keep it undercover. So it looks now like Checkuser policy is a bit outdated, and needs to be updated according to the current state of technical possibilities. Do you think it would be a good idea, or is it intentional that new features are not described?
  2. It appears that checkusers can now see logs for more than 1 month. Can you confirm if it is the case, and how long is it now? Local checkusers in Russian wikipedia now publish results for users who did not edit in the last month, and some people in the community suspect again that false information could be provided. IMHO it would be good to clarify such technical issues so that people calm down.

Thank you for you attention! AstroNomer-ru 12:27, 21 May 2007 (UTC)Reply

Just a reply to #2... CheckUser data is derived from the same edit-list that Recent changes is. On a large wiki, the RC information is only stored for a short amount of time (as opposed to a smaller wiki). So, it varies from wiki-to-wiki based on the number of Recent changes. Cbrown1023 talk 20:37, 22 May 2007 (UTC)Reply
Hm, are you sure about this? Do you say that checkuser data is only derived from the recent changes list that is publicly available (5000 items or so)? Then on a wiki like Russian it would be only a few days (about a week), which is obviously not the case. Or did I get you wrong? Thanks! AstroNomer-ru 10:41, 23 May 2007 (UTC)Reply
Not that is publicly available. The RC feed is emptied as more actions are recorded and that is the actions that are reported during a CU query. It really all depends on the amount of recent edits you have had, not the time that has elapsed (although that, of course, has a large effect). The list is not always publicly available (only a small bit of it is), but it is still the same feed. Cbrown1023 talk 01:30, 24 May 2007 (UTC)Reply
I seem to be able to see checkuser logs for about 2 months on all projects. Cary Bass demandez 12:14, 24 May 2007 (UTC)Reply

Yiddish Wikipedia

Hi, i hope my words reach u in the best of state. i am turning to u as a last resort to save our wiki project in the Yiddish language, we are a very small wiki, most users are 1 or 2 guys writing and writing whatever hours in the day they can we have grown this small language into a powerful database relative to our language speakers with about 100,000 users into an encyclopedia of 3,600 articles.

Now after we have come such a long hard way it is all in danger of falling apart. The history goes back since day one of our existence.

To understand this unique situation u must understand who the speakers are, most of them are from a very very fundamental and fanatical, closed society called Satmar Hasidim. since we are very traditional minded and preserving of old strict customs and ancient Jewish European lifestyle.

The freedom of information that the foundation tries to preserve and promote gets in the face of our belief system that all information is no good for instance sex and heresy are severe sins to read never mind to write them.

From day one i was there to fight the fight of the foundation that no religious censership should be tolerated, ask Danny Wool how much terror i went trhough in this wiki for writing everything that is fact, i was dysysoped after votes, and thereafter when they blocked me out for nothing i was resysoped by a unanimous decision of all stewards. i was last month talked into again give up my sysop by Danny on the hopes to build up a community, since i am the fighter for freedom of all kinds of info i cannot be sysop in the same time of fighting the content of articles because a sysop cannot be part of the fight.

Now again all kinds of votes of sockpupets want to become sysop and bureaucrat, in order to silence me and censure out my work, i would like to warn u this is no community. this is simply one guy with 6 names who dont have any contribution's at all only edit fights and talk pages and votes.

Please before any stewred promotes somebody to sysop talk first to one of our sysops Danny or Harel or Dror becouse the consequences will be irreparable.

Thanks so much.--יודל 17:21, 8 June 2007 (UTC)Reply

how to obtain agreement for grant application?

Dear Cass, I'm an academic who has been shortlisted for a grant, in a project that would allow me to devote lots of time to new Wikiversity activities. If the project succeeds, lots of other academics would join in with this Wikiversity work, which is working to create new models for Open Research. A letter of support from the Wikiversity or Wikimedia board would really help. I understand that the role of Wikimedia Grants Coordinator is vacant at the moment. Do you have any suggestions for how I might deliver a one page summary of the project with a view to possibly getting a letter of support? Big thank you, Open Research 21:15, 10 June 2007 (UTC)Reply

Username Usurpation

Is there a page on Meta to go about requesting the usurpation of a username? Some time ago I was granted the name Lexicon on en.wiki, as it had no edits and did not respond to the usurpation request. I find that the name is also taken on Meta (presumably by the same user), also without any edits, and I would like to have it here as well. If there is no formal page or process for usurpation, would it be possible to get an ad hoc usurpation? Thanks for any help you could be. Osgoodelawyer 14:04, 14 June 2007 (UTC)Reply

Misplaced message

Cory (or, to use Open Research's forename-surname conflation supra, which I quite like, Cass), I was perusing your OTRS templates page and happened upon a query posted on 25 January by Glacious that I gather was meant for your talk page; since it was rather out-of-place, I removed it. It appears the issue, one related to a request for bureaucrat access on dv.wiki, was subsequently handled by Redux (and is in any event obviously old), but I imagine I ought to let you know since the message was, after all, intended for you. Please lock user who exposes privacy and identity of other user

This user yi:באַניצער:יודל קרויס has the privacy of a real name [2] created this night and blocked already. but his sockpupet isn't blocked. This user yi:באַניצער:Joel.m should also be blocked due to check user results [3] who has shown it to be the guy responsible for the action that exposes privacy of other users.

I told you on the phone what this name קרויס is a private name of a user, i have asked you if you believe me you told me Yes. And you declined afterwards to block him. saying over in the irc channel that its based on my word solely. So if you don't believe me why have you told me on the phone you believed me? i understand from this that you just wanted to get me off the phone. I hope you will have time today to see into this situation. Because the foundation secretary tells me that you are the only person responsible for such thinks. thanks and have a good day--יודל 13:57, 2 July 2007 (UTC)Reply

gettings started at Wikibooks

Just wanted to let you know that i've thrown some things together, and we now have b:Using Wikibooks. It's like help-pages, but formatted as a book! The obviousness of the approach seems unbelievable in hindsight.

Anyway, it's still a work in progress, but it's got some good material that new users can read to get started. If you have any more people inquiring about Wikibooks, you can point them to that page (at least until I get around to coming up with a standard email letter to send them). --Whiteknight (meta) (Books) 21:23, 31 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

Russian Wiki-Conference organising committee e-mail address

Dear Cary,

could you please advise me a bit? Here is a question from the Wiki-Conference committe (details below):

The Russian Wikipedia (and other mediawikis) community is organising its first WikiConference (ru:Википедия:Викиконференция 2007 - unfortunately, in Russian only yet; it might be something like Wikimania 2006). It is planned on October 27-28 in St.Petersburg (Russia). As soon as we make a final choice where exactly it will be held, we will issue a short press-release, which we are going to translate in English (hopefully in beginning next week).

In order to contact various organisations, a e-mail like "ruwikiconference(at)wikimedia.org" would be quite useful for the organisation committee. Could we ask the Foundation to grant us such an address at least temporarily? We need it for use in press-releases and when writing to potential participans like universities and other rather conservative institutions.

As we see it, it could be a e-mail address redirected to a mail list used by the wikiconference organisation committee members. We suppose it couldn't cause any significant load on the Foundation's servers.

Could you please advise us if we could get a help like this, or how we would handle this problem else?

Thank you!

OTRS Enquiry

Hi Bastique,

I saw you listed on the OTRS page. I am an administrator over at Wikibooks and I was wondering if you could answer a question that i need answering. The book b:The Guide for Electronic Theses and Dissertations is not currenly licensed under the GFDL, it is copyrighted. The owners have expressed an interest in allowing the book to be used on wikibooks. However, they are not entirely sure how to do this.

Upon holding conversations with other user's and contributors to the wikimedia projects, I am under the impression that there are two key ways of making this happen. The first involves the copyright holder altering the copyright notice on their website, the other involves the OTRS system, through the permissions channel. However, i am not familiar with the OTRS system and before i can explain how it works to the copyright owner, I need to know myself.

Would the copyright owner need to send an email directly to the OTRS channel, or could correspondance be forwarded from myself? What exactly needs to be sent in the email outlining permission? Where exactly would permission need to be sent? etc...

If you could please mull over these questions and get back to me as soon as possible, it would be greatly appreciated.

Regards, Urbane 12:53, 29 October 2007 (UTC)Reply

I hope it's alright that I am answering on behalf of Bastique here, but here goes. :-) You can send the e-mail message or they can send the mail message to permissions [at] wikimedia.org, it can also be a threaded discussion or just permission from them. The only thing we should need from them to confirm the permission is something along the lines of "We, the authors of this document, agree to license it under the GFDL, as outlined at <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WP:GFDL>." It would also be very helpful if they did this from an "official-looking" e-mail address (like one provided by the company that owns the copyright.) More information on getting permission (or alternate statements) can be found at w:en:Wikipedia:Requesting copyright permission. I hope this helps and if not, please do not hesitate to ask for clarification. :-) Cbrown1023 talk 20:31, 29 October 2007 (UTC)Reply

Hello Bastique

The Non Discrimination Policy 'may not be circumvented, eroded, or ignored on local Wikimedia projects'[5]. The local Wikipedias are local Wikimedia projects [6]. So this policy is valid for the Wikipedias. On the other hand the Wikipedias are also governed by their own policies. I see here a contradiction between both policies. Can you give me an official and valid answer to this question?

Thanks in advance, sincery -- 84.61.231.84 09:15, 21 November 2007 (UTC)Reply

Identity verification to become a Steward

Hello, if I want to become a Steward, I have to prove that I'm 18 or above right? May I just simply send my identity document (such as passport, identity card, driving license) to the Wikimedia Foundation office (or whatever such as Post Office Box)? What should my mail contain besides one of these? And when I list myself in the election page here, should I put up my real name according to my identity document in the page too? And is there a deadline of when should the document arrive to you? Thanks! --Edmund the King of the Woods! 11:12, 26 November 2007 (UTC)Reply

Provision of documents to the Wikimania '09 Jury

Hi Bastique. Part of my Wikimania bid involves certain documents (price quotes, etc) that I have received from various venues and the like, which have been given to me commercial in confidence. For this reason, I do not wish to include them in the actual bid page. As a moderator, are you in a position to distribute these documents to members of the jury so that they may be considered as part of Brisbane's bid?

Thanks, Lankiveil 06:44, 20 January 2008 (UTC).Reply

Hi, I think we're going to make a specific announcement to the bidding teams about things like this. You should probably just offer a summary for the members of the jury rather than any actual documents, but you should certainly include estimates on your bid page less any confidential information. Thanks muchly. I would also like to draw the following to the jury's attention: Talk:Wikimania_2009#Public_Meeting. As you can see, Aphaia is aware of it, but I thought it might come off as rude to spam such a complaint onto every juror's talk page. Lankiveil 10:25, 23 January 2008 (UTC).Reply

A request about an uncivilized sysop in he.wiki

Hello Bastique,

On June 23 MaxSem have revoked the sysop rights of User:Yonidebest from he.wikipedia at his own request.

This request has come after a community discussion + vote in which Yonidebest lost.

His recent behavior dragged his block by דוד שי.

In addition, Yonidebest abused his bot flag in a few occasions, including the deletion of hunderds of unused uploaded photos (each time the word תמונה is mentioned it means photo) without gaining consensus from the community or permission from דוד שי who granted him the bot flag.

Is it o.k that one of the bureaucrats in he.wiki will contact you in order to remove the sysop rights of his bot account? The bot account is Yonidebot. The bureaucrats wish to remove all the privileges of the bot account and it is wrong that he will keep the sysop rights after that since he is no longer a sysop himself.

This is quite urgent since the bureaucrats wish to end this thing as quickly as possible.

I have also posted this in the UserTalk page of MaxSem, but later discovered that he is not very active in the last days. ברוקולי 13:22, 24 January 2008 (UTC)Reply

Question BC vs BCE

Hi BASTIQUE! I recently made me an account to change some BC notes in articles, cause i found it rather too unneutral (its the believers standpoint and tradition).

I saw lots of structure build up around the BC thing in wikipedia (millennia, centuries) and i question why?

Secondly i searched the wikistructure up for help and there is much less build around the BC thing (NPOV, Style-Guide...) and i secondly questioned - WHY?

Have a look at the Danish village pump

Hi Cary. In case you didn't get my IRC message, before you logged out: I hope, I can persuade you into having another look at your Danish village pump post, where some users (including myself) have adressed various questions to you. It would be nice with some repsonse to these, so hopefully you'll take the time to reply.

Thanks in advance. --Pred 22:18, 11 February 2008 (UTC)Reply

No, I will not respond to your aggressiveness. Your comments have been written in a tone that persists in making accusations. You've taken comments I made on IRC in frustration, out of context, comments for which I've already apologized. I'm sorry your feelings were hurt by my remark about your ability to read, which was based on my frustration with the entire experience, both by the individual and the dawiki community response to him. I have responded fully and adequately and there is no further point in elaborating. Cary Bass demandez 23:24, 11 February 2008 (UTC)Reply
Since you won't answer my question either I will ask it here: How will future foundation interventions be handled? Will they be announced to the local community? --Morten LJ 08:54, 12 February 2008 (UTC)Reply
This question seems too simplistic to address the complexity of issues that are dealt with on a regular basis. You have to to define "intervention" and what actions it encompasses. Will every action by the foundation be announced to the community? Will we announce when we remove a child editor's private information posted inadvertently? The unpublished home address of a notable film star? Photographs depicting illegal acts that have been uploaded by trolls? Certainly not! Also, bear in mind that one of our more obvious goals is the reduction of drama, which can polarize and gridlock a community. Having a stated policy regarding such actions, where we can point people is the more obvious intent of this.
Obviously we made some mistakes here, changes will have to be made in how such situations have to be approached. Remember, Assume Good Faith is a Foundation wide policy--and applies to the actions of the Foundation as well as the actions of the community in general. You have to apply it to us just as we have to apply it to you. Cary Bass demandez 15:16, 12 February 2008 (UTC)Reply
Thank you for your answer. --Morten LJ 15:51, 12 February 2008 (UTC)Reply
(Edit conflict:) I am sorry, but I don't see how pointing out the need of a proper tone invalidates the relevant questions in the post, so, please, take the time to reply (I might have missed it, but I don't remember seeing anything but a reference to comments being misinterpretations, and even if written in frustration, I don't believe that makes them any more apropriate, but let's just forget about that then). If not on the Danish Wikipedia then at least here; what changes will be made, and will they involve involving the Danish community in decision making processes? I believe this to be the core issure. Of course, some problems, such as some of those you mention, are easily solvable and don't require a long pointless process, but I'm sure most people feel, that the present one does not fall into that category: Remember, basically every single administrator active in discussions either signed the initial complaint on the Danish wiki or wanted to have the chance to sign it, when it was complete – that should mean something. Anyway, I would just like some elaborating on that single question. Thanks. --Pred 16:00, 12 February 2008 (UTC)Reply
No, you've taken my comments in IRC out of context. I posted an apology in IRC. If you received my negative comments, said in anger, then you've surely received my retraction on IRC. You've not chosen to publish those, or any of the remarks made by anyone else on that channel. I cannot help that other members of the community, who told me that they would assist in explaining our position have not chosen to do so at this time, or that you seem to have more time than most to argue the point. I cannot devote any more time to the matter than I am able to, contrary to your personal impatience. I do not believe you (Pred) represent the community any longer. Cary Bass demandez 16:39, 12 February 2008 (UTC)Reply
Furthermore, I cannot simply answer any question you might have without having to spend hours responding to your massive distortion of events. This is what the impropriety of your tone has to do with anything. Cary Bass demandez 16:48, 12 February 2008 (UTC)Reply
I'm very sorry, if you feel I've taken anything out of context, but in that case, I would, as I just stated on IRC before you left for your meeting, like to know which one(s) you were talking about: I've read the logs over some times, and I don't see any omitted retraction. You did apologize your behaviour on this page, and as I said, I'm very happy with that. But, as far as I can see, you just left before getting very angry (which is entirely understandable by the way). Anyway, I have no idea if my above comment in any way represents the community as a whole; I just stated that the complaint did. But, if other members of the community are able to help, I will of course talk to them and not waste your time, if there's no reason to; who is able to clarify the above? After all, we did spend some time on IRC getting nowhere. --Pred 17:31, 12 February 2008 (UTC) 17:29, 12 February 2008 (UTC)Reply

Hi, there

OTRS access

Hi,

I'm not sure I'm in the right place to ask, but I can't find any better :)

I'm (temporary) admin of ru.wikibooks.org. As part of my admin job I need to solve copyright issues. There's a lot of texts wich are derived (mostly translated) from other sources in wikibooks, and sometimes these sources are not free or GFDL-incompatible. So I need to contact to original authors for permissions to distribute these derivatives under GFDL and sometimes it is easier for the authors to send a letter to permissions@ than post some GFDL message on their site. So I'd like to get some access to permissions@ (and maybe permissions-commons@) address. Is it possible with my current admin status?

Thanks. ~REX••talk•• 03:37, 3 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

Plea

Dear Bastique,

Excuse me if I interfere in a matter that does not concern me personally, but as a member of the Swedish Wikipedia community, I feel I have the duty to voice my disenchantment when the actions of a sysop is threatening to alienate a valuable contributor of our community. You know the basic facts of the case, and I will not reiterate them. Let me just make a few additions.

To begin with, in his message to sv:Islander, en:Islander states that as a matter of policy, he as a sysop has precedence. However, if you actually check the edit history of that policy, you will find that it was formulated on May 29.

Clearly aware of this recent change to policy (since he edited on that page on June 1), en:Islander asks User:Giddy for advice how to approach Islander, and the conversation shows that en:Islander has known about sv:Islander since February, that is a month after en:Islander usurped the account on English Wikipedia. Shortly afterwards, Giddy archives the discussion and leaves no trace on the userpage that this discussion has taken place.

To me, it looks like en:Islander is trying to game the system in his favor and that he has abused his status has administrator at English Wikipedia in order to set a precedent on a policy that has not yet been fixed. This is not the way we do things on Wikipedia.

I apologize if I have uttered any harsh words in various forums, but this is the first time I learned about this I feel that it is my duty to speak up. Sincerely, --Bothnia 01:38, 5 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

I emailed both users yesterday, in hopes that we can come to a resolution. I understand the situation fairly well, and I believe that it can be resolved amicably. However, accusations of "gaming the system" will not help the situation and I urge you to have faith that things will be treated fairly. It might appear that way to you, but it does not mean it's his intent. Cary Bass demandez 15:55, 5 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

Thanks. I hope you are right, after what I have been through since yesterday, I have my doubts and will pull out for the time being. Since I started editing on Wikipedia two years ago, I have become acutely aware of the fact that ordinary users are routinely treated brusquely by sysops. All I have tried to do was to speak up on behalf of a member of our community, and I have effectively been told to shut up or else be blocked. On Swedish Wikipedia, administrators at least have to renew their sysop status on a yearly basis, but on English language Wikipedia it is virtually impossible to argue with an admin, which is why I have more or less given up editing on English language Wikipedia about a year ago. That's it. Good luck with the meditation, I hope you will at least consider the information I pasted above.--Bothnia 19:02, 5 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

Sysop access at en.labs.wikimedia

Hi Bastique! I want to request sysop access at en.labs.wikimedia, to test the features, make screenshots and document the system messages at betawiki:. Thank you, SPQRobin 21:59, 14 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

Would it be possible to make me a sysop too? I will use them to test the features. You may have not seen me before, I’m an experienced editor on nowiki (with patrol, autopatrol and rollback access), and a sysop on nowikibooks. — H92 (t · c · no) 11:25, 24 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

Some Dutch problems

Sr. D. Cary Bastique: I am very sorry Sir to have to bother you, but unfortunately from Holland some stalking (sysop)people there keep being blaming and shaming me about nothing serious, as I already informed mrs. Gardner here, after asking for Help on the now locked desk .... They do proceed to metawiki here into the page of talk:Vandalism reports second part, so I feel no other way than to inform you too. Though feeling provoked but again apologizing, I 'll thank you in advance for your attention. Respectfully yours, I remain D.A. Borgdorff = IP 86.83.155.44 20:15, 27 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

Thank you for your fast reaction. With you, I still keep hope of dealing matters "well done". Kind regards et cetera: Borgdorff = 86.83.155.44 22:09, 27 June 2008 (UTC)Reply
I'm very unfortunate Sir to have to let you know that in the meantime nothing has done to solve the arisen problems, with exception of admin in Spain, but not in Holland. Sincerely: Borgdorff 86.83.155.44 01:49, 3 July 2008 (UTC)Reply
- Dammit 23:43, 3 July 2008 (UTC)Reply
  • Sir Cary Bastique, apparently you'd not want to reply yourself, and on my age I've never had chats or something like about an important scientific reference. If bias is more prominent than open discussion, I do have this comprehension enough to understand what matters are involved. I'd state only feel obliged to properly inform you of some controverses involved, that I'll have to effectively proper handled another way though. I'm unfortunately sorry to have your time disturbed. The above Dutch mentioned translation of the book from Masson & Cie, Éditeurs: René-Louis Vallée: L'énergie électromagnétique matérielle et gravitationnelle - Paris, 1971 - is not the problem itself, but was so notified ... it was the classified edition itself (with all kinds of occult translations) that is contested of as: en:fringe science with yawns from a couple of biased persons with prejudice.!! This bias is awarded though, unfortunately. Kind regards: D.A. Borgdorff, e.i. = 86.83.155.44 10:53, 6 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

Attention of mr. Cary Bass: Sir - I again like to thank you, and mrs. Sue Gardner as I did, for your collaboration regarding my remarks et cetera. Unfortunately there is only "non-discussion" possible in 'the' Netherlands, with a look-a-like no-sense blocking up again. - As I understand for now, only G'd can help us out of Egypt. - Concluding with kind regards, I am: D.A. Question re: the basis for Jimmy's authority

Hi Cary - could you, or somebody else from the WMF, weigh in on this question? Thanks, Sarcasticidealist 16:19, 28 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

I would expect that Jimmy would be the appropriate person to respond to that question. Cary Bass demandez 15:36, 30 June 2008 (UTC)Reply
I dropped a note on his enwiki talk page a few days ago, so hopefully he will have a look at our discussions at some point, because I think that his involvement would be valuable. But even apart from the value of his involvement, there's a question that needs answering: is Jimmy's authority on enwiki a Foundation-imposed thing or a thing for the community to decide? Absent any declaration otherwise from somebody at the WMF, it seems to be the view of the enwiki community that Jimmy's authority is a community matter. If it isn't, somebody from the WMF should weigh in pretty quick. Sarcasticidealist 16:23, 30 June 2008 (UTC)Reply
Again, Jimmy is the founder and on the Foundation board. He's perfectly able to answer this question himself, and would be the appropriate one to provide the answer. Furthermore, I don't understand what the rush is, or why you've sought the need to bring this matter to Meta. Cary Bass demandez 16:31, 30 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

Rename

Hi Bastique, sorry to bother you. I would like to ask your help in renaming me at [8] because you are, I think, the only active bureaucrat there. Moulton's blog

If Moulton were of a mind to remove whatever content is hosted on his blog that is causing it to be unacceptable to link to it, what would he have do to accomplish this? —Random832 17:43, 8 August 2008 (UTC)Reply

I suggest you contact the enwikiversity community to discuss this. Cary Bass demandez 18:55, 8 August 2008 (UTC)Reply
It's a "foundation directive"; I don't see how the community is relevant. —Random832 19:49, 8 August 2008 (UTC)Reply
Where do you see any directive by the Foundation? If you have a problem with the Wikiversity community you need to discuss it with them. Cary Bass demandez 20:15, 8 August 2008 (UTC)Reply

http://en.wikiversity.org/w/index.php?title=User:Moulton&diff=prev&oldid=303375 Edit summary "per foundation directive". —Random832 03:15, 10 August 2008 (UTC)Reply

That edit summary is erroneous. There is no "foundation directive". The English Wikiversity, like every other active project is autonimous. If you want an answer on this, discuss the matter with the individual who performed that edit. Cary Bass demandez 15:58, 11 August 2008 (UTC)Reply

one sided

Scenario 2 is one sided. Why not ask for an explanation from Moulton and then publish that so people get both sides. As for me, I still don't see the need to out anyone on the Ethics project itself. But BADSITES is a bad and unworkable policy proposal that was rejected by the Wikipedia community. How about a link to a page that contains a link to a page that contains a link to an outing page? It is unworkable and game-able to ban links based on outing at that page. Especially links that are useful for other reasons. Thoughtful, careful, caring assessment of competing values and priorities is appropriate. Unthinking blind adherence to any one value (like not outing) is by definition, unreasonable. WAS 4.250 20:34, 11 August 2008 (UTC)Reply

I emailed the only side I knew: my side in my position as Volunteer Coordinator, which is based on what I've seen and my perceptions of events. It's entirely relevant to the conversation. I doubt either "side" would consider what I said, their side. I would like to stress that foundation-l is an open email list and anyone is free to join and participate in the discussion. Cary Bass demandez 02:35, 12 August 2008 (UTC)Reply
"the only side I knew: my side" Exactly my point. WAS 4.250 13:13, 12 August 2008 (UTC)Reply
Then your point makes no sense. I'm not going to have debates about core values about our project, that I hold, including the right to pseudonymous participation; in which "not outing" is an affront, and I'm not going to lend credibility by participation to a project that I'm increasingly (seven emails overnight from its leader and an unrelated individual from Wikipedia Review to add to that) is nothing more than a platform (despite your own involvement) to give legitimacy to his personal (and pointless) crusade to out English Wikipedia participants with a political leaning that he and most of the world's scientific community and population already don't agree with.Cary Bass demandez 15:46, 12 August 2008 (UTC)Reply
WAS 4.240, I think the key point here is that Cary has raised an issue that we do need to think about... with a community of different wikis, with different norms, how do we reconcile that. How much voice should people have in wikis where they have no activity at all? How do we reconcile the difference in how different wikis get things done? What if that difference impacts people globally? These are all valid questions. Reading too much into exactly who did what to who in a specific instance may not be the best approach. ++Lar: t/c 18:38, 12 August 2008 (UTC)Reply
WAS, I don't think Cary is the potential bad guy here (not saying that Moulton is, either). BADSITES thankfully was killed on en.wiki, but local projects are sovereign of each other and should make all their own local decisions there. If Moulton's blog is a seen as a problem on wikiversity, it should be brought up there, really. rootology (T) 01:31, 13 August 2008 (UTC)Reply
I think everyone involved is doing the best they can to be helpful. But "I'm not going to lend credibility by participation to a project that I'm increasingly (seven emails overnight from its leader and an unrelated individual from Wikipedia Review to add to that) is nothing more than a platform (despite your own involvement) to give legitimacy to his personal (and pointless) crusade to out English Wikipedia participants with a political leaning that he and most of the world's scientific community and population already don't agree with" is a wild unsubstantiated accusation and hubristic point of view and incorrectly claims we have a "leader". No one is asking Cary to "lend credibility". Just stop interfering with a research project that is creating learning resources on the subject of "Ethical Management of the English Language Wikipedia" at WikiVersity. No one elected him Grand Censor Almighty. WAS 4.250 12:12, 13 August 2008 (UTC)Reply
Get over your high and mighty self. I am talking about the thread on founfation-l which you are whining about not being fair. Well, this is how I see the games that this person is playing on our projects and to which you are either wittingly or unwittingly contributing. I was actually "expecting better" from you, WAS, but it seems your going to support his abhorrent behavior blindly. With that frame of mind, there's nothing more you need to say here. Cary Bass demandez 15:09, 13 August 2008 (UTC)Reply
I respectfully disagree with your unsubstantiated assessments of him, me, and the ethics project. If you read all the on-wiki conversation between Moulton and myself you will find many many examples of me doing the opposite of supporting him "blindly". You need to stop creating drama by creating problems where none exist. BADSITES is not policy. Emails to you complaining that someone is violating a nonexistent policy is the problem of the person sending you the email; not your problem. Not WikiVersity problem. However "there's nothing more you need to say here" is a problem for you as it indicates a closed mind; suggesting you already know everything you need to know and have no reason to learn more. Which might explain a lot of your behavior, that appears to substitute prejudice for facts. WAS 4.250 19:31, 13 August 2008 (UTC)Reply
Well, WAS, it seems we're both reading a lot into what each other is not saying, re "unsubstantiated assessments" and on-wiki conversations and who I am or am not speaking with. I know that I could say the exact same for you, only switching around a few sentence objects or subjects, so we're at an impasse. Kindly stop insinuating you have any idea how my mind functions. I started this thing with an open mind. Certain individuals playing games with me quickly gave me an perspective. Cary Bass demandez 20:55, 13 August 2008 (UTC)Reply
It is certainly true that it could be me who is wrong here. Likely we are both part right and part wrong. But in any case, I still think everyone involved in this is trying to help WikiMedia projects. WAS 4.250 12:23, 14 August 2008 (UTC)Reply
I apologize if I came across that I felt as if you, WAS, aren't trying to contribute in a positive manner. It is not the case at all, but my frustration with the whole situation colored my reaction. I'm stepping back from it, as I have an abundance of other projects which are occupying my time. Cary Bass demandez 17:22, 14 August 2008 (UTC)Reply
Thank you for the clarification. I also feel very frustrated with this whole thing. Just a tad more reasonableness from either Felonious Monk or Moulton and we would be very much better off. They are both very stubborn. WAS 4.250 19:04, 14 August 2008 (UTC)Reply

Actually, it is that simple :-)

I saw your comment this morning, but you haven't reappeared on IRC and I'm having a very "AFK" sort of day. But yes, the bloom clock really is that simple... here's what you do:

  1. Add yourself to the contributor's list
  2. If you see a flower, you can either use the global keys or if you know the common name just use search to find the profile.
  3. when you find the plant you saw, just hit the little edit thingie next to "recent logs", and add *~~~~ at the bottom (some of the old log pages will show a bit screwy, but just add it under the "recent logs" header if you run across that).

And that's it, for the start. After you've logged 10 plants, we make a new set of regional categories and keys, and ask you to add a template to the profiles when you log to trigger the categories (which enables us to use some mediawiki extensions that keep your local keys up to date). It's definitely a good way to "get into" WV, since it's designed for learning, teaching, and conducting research with each edit :-). --SB_Johnny|talk|books 16:24, 15 August 2008 (UTC)Reply

Temporaly sysop access.

(If you don't understand this message, please tell me and I'll rewrite) -- Dferg (talk) 21:10, 17 August 2008 (UTC) Estimado señor o señora.Reply

--Dferg (talk) 20:36, 18 August 2008 (UTC)Reply
